My Oxford Year: A New-Age Romantic Drama

My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris, isn’t just your usual Netflix rom-com movie. The “rom-com” movie takes a serious turn, leaving the audience silent. My Oxford Year shows Anna De La Vega (Sofia Carson), an eager grad student who finds her way to study Victorian Poetry at Oxford University. Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest) turns out to be her professor.

Well, I am no one to give away any spoilers, but My Oxford Year has all the charms of a rom-com, but that’s not what it is about. This isn’t a lovey-dovey escapism or just an emotional movie. My Oxford Year depicts that love will find its way, even though it might not be forever. Kinda gives the game away, right? This Netflix drama isn’t heart-warming, but it’s heart-wrenching. This romantic drama movie is gaining love from people around the world. My Oxford Year is adapted from the novel of the same name, written by Julia Whelan in 2018.

Sofia Carson: From a Disney Star Evie to Anna

Sofia Carson has made her fans fall in love with her onscreen presence in Netflix’s Purple Hearts and The Life List. However, her new film is giving away a narrative of the classic traditional love story. Sofia Carson started her film career as Evie in 'Descendants', which premiered on the Disney Channel and soon became a musical franchise adored by the audience.

Corey Mylchreest: The Bridgerton Star Breaking Hearts Again

Corey Mylchreest, the Queen Charlotte: a Bridgerton Story star, left the audience falling in love with him as he played the role of King George. The actor is set to captivate the audience and possibly evoke emotions in his new Netflix drama movie, “My Oxford Year”. Corey Mylchreest started his TV debut with a small role in 'The Sandman' and since his onscreen presence as Young King George, he has been winning hearts.

Fan Reactions & Social Media Buzz

Fans all over the world are going crazy over the romantic drama movie. And guess what? It’s pretty understandable and a valid reaction. Some were also not quite a fan of this movie for their own reasons. Let’s have a look at what fans and audience had a say in the Netflix drama, My Oxford Year:

A viewer on Twitter wrote, "I wasn't ready to bawl my eyes out like this, but #MyOxfordYear made me sob so many times (it also made me smile and laugh). Sofia and Corey Mylchreest were such a perfect match, and I would love to see them again in other projects. By the way, this movie is already a classic in my book."

Another Twitter user said, “This movie was beautiful. Sofia and Corey Mylchreest did a really great job, and it was hard to take your eyes off the screen, but the ending broke my heart.” Someone reviewed, “I really thought I was going to see the best romantic comedy of the year, but they decided to give me the most heartbreaking movie of the year!”

“Thought I was watching a cute romance… just finished the movie and WHY AM I A SOBBING MESS RIGHT NOW???!” said a viewer. A second viewer agreed, and wrote, “Well sorry to burst the bubble of innocent people like me who thought this would be just another college extra-fluff romcom most of us signed up for, but turns out #myoxfordyear is not a romcom. I just finished watching it, and honestly, I feel like jumping off a cliff right now.”

Book to Movie Adaptation

Julia Whelan's novel, My Oxford Year, was published back in 2018. The book ended differently from the emotional movie. The producers and screenwriters wanted to focus more on the screenplay than the original book.

There are a few changes between the movie and the novel. In the book, Carson’s name is Eleanor Duran, but in this romantic drama movie, her character's name is Anna De Va Lega. In the book, Eleanor’s dad died in a car accident, leading to a shift in her patterns in building relationships while growing as an adult. In the Netflix drama, both Anna’s parents are alive. In the book, Jamie’s brother's name is Oliver and moreover, Cecelia and Oliver are engaged. But in the movie, Eddie is shown dead due to cancer and Cecelia was just Eddie’s girlfriend. The major difference was in the ending, where fans were sobbing. In the book, Jamie overcomes his medical issues and gets back together with Eleanor and they travel together. But, in this Netflix rom-com, the director leaves it off in a sad ending where Anna travels alone without Jamie. There have been a lot of questions raised as to why there was this huge difference. The screenwriters and producers said that they tested the two possible endings but saw that the sad ending was more powerful and gave away a strong message and sparked a lot of debates than the book ending.

Final Thoughts: Why ‘My Oxford Year’ is a Must-Watch

Okay, let’s be honest here. Is there anything more romantic than an American traveling to the UK for a life-changing experience? That is the takeaway from the Netflix drama My Oxford Year. Or is it just a rom-com movie, a romantic drama movie, or should we just call it an emotional movie? You name it, cause My Oxford Year fits in all the boxes.

My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris, is a romantic drama movie with an emotional and heart-wrenching ending that takes a quick turn towards sorrow, leaving the audience speechless and sobbing. However, pursuing a romantic relationship at Oxford University goes against the University's policy. So, only that part was not quite practical. Apart from that, this movie depicts a classic traditional love story between two people that viewers feel emotionally attached to.

Lately, Hollywood has been giving audiences some great movies back-to-back across all genres. But especially with rom-com movies like the 'Materialists' or romantic drama, audiences have been appreciating and loving the film.

Moreover, the selection of cast to showcase the onscreen romance and chemistry is quite important and has been beautifully depicted in My Oxford Year. Also, Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest having a loving fan base made the film even more special to the actors.
